The Tsukiji Outer Market developed alongside the Tsukiji Inner Market and continues to operate in Tsukiji even after the relocation of the inner market. It serves both professional chefs and the general public. The market retains many of Japan’s traditional buildings, and among its 460 retail and dining shops, you can find stores selling bonito flakes, kelp, pickled foods, and kitchen knives. There are nine shops specializing in tamagoyaki (Japanese omelets), which are essential for sushi, and ten wholesalers of bonito flakes. Additionally, you can purchase tableware, bowls, and chopsticks. Each shop has its own unique character, and many buyers have been coming here for years. Furthermore, at the “Tsukiji Uogashi” wholesale market, which gathers 60 wholesale shops, you can buy fresh fish and produce.

The Background Behind the Demand for Cooking Classes Among Foreign VIPs

1. Foreign Executives Seeking Authentic Japanese Cultural Experiences

We frequently receive inquiries from Japanese staff and secretaries saying that foreign executives and VIPs often express similar desires: “We’re tired of high-end restaurants and tourist spots. We want a real hands-on cultural experience in Japan” or “We don’t just want to eat sushi; we want to experience making it ourselves.”

Amid the growing global popularity of Japanese cuisine and sake, foreign executives have a strong desire to learn about Japanese food, sake, and culture. Their interest extends beyond typical tourist experiences, reflecting a clear demand for more authentic and immersive cultural encounters in Japan.

2. The Growing Demand for “Team-Building Cooking”

“Team-Building Cooking” is a common team-building method overseas. There is growing demand for cooking experiences as a way to strengthen team dynamics, involving both Japanese and foreign executives.

Experience Japanese-Style *Omotenashi* Through Cooking

Culinary Experiences: The Ultimate Form of *Omotenashi* Sought by VIPs

In response to the growing demand for Japanese culinary experiences, Japanese executives and staff can share and explain Japanese cultural experiences through cooking classes. This approach helps convey an understanding of Japanese people and the spirit of *omotenashi* (hospitality) to foreign executives.

Reasons Why Tsukiji Cooking is Chosen

1. Program Customization Available

(1) Expertise in Serving Foreign Executives: For health-conscious foreign executives and VIPs, more detailed dietary accommodations such as vegetarian, halal, and gluten-free options are often required. “It was perfect for improving communication among executives of global companies.”

“Shopping for fresh fish and vegetables at the Tsukiji Outer Market and then making sushi together with Japanese executives was the most memorable experience during my stay in Japan. I believe this shared experience helped improve teamwork among global executives. Additionally, the sake tasting, which I had always wanted to learn about as a personal hobby, was extremely informative. I look forward to trying sake again at a sushi restaurant when I return to New York.”

– What is Tsukiji Outer  Market?-

The Tsukiji Outer Fish Market developed with the Tsukiji inner Fish Market which remained after the relocation of the inner market to Toyosu and continued to operate for professional chefs and general customers.

Apart from the old Japanese buildings that still exist, there are 460 retail units, eateries, and shops dealing with bonito, kelp, tsukudani and kitchen knives. There are nine omelet specialty stores indispensable as sushi restaurants, and ten stores act as wholesalers of bonito. You can also shop for dishes, bowls, and chopsticks. Each shop has its own personality; each store has its own characteristics, and the purchasers have visited for many years. In the fresh market “Tsukiji Fish market” where more than 60 wholesalers are gathered, fresh fish and fruits and vegetables can be purchased.

Our Programs

Select from our following formats, ranging from basic team building cooking to Japanse Sake tasting competitions:

Basic Program

A fun and entertaining team event based on the sample Japanese cuisine menus. This action-packed event commences with an exciting demonstration on how to cook and present a dish by one of our cheerful instructors. Your group then prepares and cooks this dish together in groups with the full support of our instructor and assistants. A dish with specially selected toppings allows each team to demonstrate their creativity. Each team then enjoys the fruits of their labor by eating what they prepared. When the food tasting is over, everyone goes home with the recipe.

From Shopping at Market to Cooking Battle

Teams must first come up with the idea of what to make and then go shop for food ingredients at Tsukiji Market within the budget pre-set for each team. Finally, teams aim to create the tastiest dish. Teams collaborate together in groups to plan, compete and win. All teams get a few minutes to view an array of ingredients and to decide what to cook. You then get about 60 to 80 minutes (depending upon the duration of the program) to cook and present your stunning dish which will be judged on taste and presentation. Teams score extra points based on style and attitude/passion. Everyone then sits down to enjoy the meal together at the end.

Cooking & Sake tasting

After tasting four different kinds of sake and listening to a lecture on their respective qualities, participants will be blindfolded and will have to guess the correct sake brand and try to beat another team by having the most correct answers. This one-of-a-kind dining experience combines cooking Japanese cuisine and a story that ties everything together. You’ll laugh while enjoying working with your team! This program can be used as a social event or a team-building dinner. The sake tasting experience can be paired with any meal in any location where you may be getting together as a group upon request.

Sake Tasting

After tasting three to five different kinds of sake and listening to a lecture on their respective qualities, participants will be blindfolded and will have to guess the correct sake brand and try to beat another team by having the most correct answers.
